WaveDancer Yacht Design-Sail and Power, Dinghies, Small Boats and Yachts

Introducing the "Sinbad"
- a 'Nesting Dinghy' for your yacht.

Principal dimensions:

L.O.A. 3.08 m (10' 1"), Beam 1.43 m (4' 8"),
Length after taking apart: 1.71 m (5' 7")
Sail area - 4.16 m2 (45 sqft).
She has buoyancy compartments in each half, i.e. in the enclosed aft seats, under the thwart and the forepeak.
Construction:

Material: 6mm (1/4") Marine plywood
Method: Epoxy stitch and glue (taped seam)

This dinghy has been designed from the outset as a 'nesting' dinghy. She combines being a usefully sized tender with modest deck space requirements in its take-apart and stowed form. She has sufficient beam for stability, but not too much, so she will still row easily.
She comes with a simple rig - a loose-footed sprit sail that sets on short spars. The benefit of the simple rig is that you will be sailing that much quicker.
The spars can optionally be sleeved so they come apart to stow inside the larger aft section.
Outboard motors are a fact of life and thus the transom height on this dinghy is just right to take a standard shaft outboard motor of 2-3.3 HP.

Building Diary: Although a number of plans have been sold, I have not been able to obtain pictures of a build. However, the Piccolo is very similar in construction and this link takes you to some very interesting pics of a recently completed boat.
You may of course build this dinghy as a one-piece if your foredeck space allows carrying a fullsize hard dinghy.
Likewise, if you just want to have a reasonably sized, easy to build and sail, knock-about dinghy - why cut it apart?

However, to turn this dinghy into the familiar two-piece boat that allows the forward part to stow in the aft section, all you have to do is to add an additional mid-bulkhead and cut the finished boat apart between bulkheads!
If foredeck space is limited, yet you still want to carry a useful tender on your yacht - This dinghy can do the job as it packs in just 1.71 m x 1.43 m (5' 7" x 4' 8").
You can build the dinghy without a construction cradle on carefully levelled chocks. It is important to check levels often so there is no twist.
Detailed building instructions are included with the plans, illustrating the various tasks in easy to follow steps.
These instructions also illustrate some simple supports cut from particle board, that will ensure additional accuracy.
The interior fit-out consisting of aft buoyancy tanks, mid-thwart and daggerboard case assembly and forepeak help to control the boat's shape.
Sail plan The nesting version has two mid-bulkheads butted together with thin shimming material. Separating the two halves is done with a hacksaw blade or back saw.
The rendered images give a good feel of the nice proportions achievable in a 10-footer. .

The sail plan at left shows the boat with boomless sprit sail. She has a free-standing mast. There are hardly any shop bought fittings needed for rigging her. A daggerboard and lifting rudder are all you need to add to complete the sailing version. The spars are short and can additionally be sleeved so they take apart for stowing inside the boat.

As mentioned before, the boat itself need not be built purely for sailing. She has been designed to take a short shaft outboard motor. Recommended is 3.3 HP, but if you beef up the transom she will carry a 5 HP motor.
Rowlocks may be fitted as either primary means of propelling her or as a back-up to the motor. If no sail is going to be set, the internal fit-out can be simplified by omitting the daggerboard case and if you don't require a take-apart dinghy, construction is simplified even more.
